Road Trip Tasties

December 20, 2008 by applec

We set out a little later than expected this morning, around 6:15 am and the weather wasn’t really accommodating.  The roads weren’t clear until we got to 81. We then hit 2 slow downs between Baltimore and Washington. The Nav. system took us right into the city of Baltimore.  But we made it and now we’re settled in at Rocky Mount, NC with about 4 hours to go for the morning.  Yahoo!

The back seat driver:

After about 2 hours of driving, we snacked on fruit. Ted had a banana and I had an apple

Following the fruit, we needed coffee to wake us up a bit, so Dunkin Donuts was a perfect solution.

Last night after getting back from dinner, I made some protein pancakes to bring along on our trip.  That worked out great. They were made with:

  •  1 cup Thick and Rough Oats
  •  4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup EggBeaters
  •  Cinnamon
  • Banana.
  •  I dropped about 1 tsp of strawberry jelly in the middle of each cooking pancake.

When we ate them, I spread 1/2 TBS peanut butter on each one and folded to make a sandwich.  Perfect for an on-the-road breakfast.

Other snacks to keep us going through out the day…

After we finally stopped in Rocky Mount, we went about 8-10 miles down the road to what we thought was a fine dining seafood restaurant.  The Mayflower Seafood Restaurant.  We were looking forward to a nice glass of wine to unwind from a long day of driving.  Ummmm… No Alcohol!  No fine dining!

Since we were pretty hungry, and the waitress was exceptionally friendly and kind with her North Carolina hospitality, we stayed.

Ted ordered the fried Calamari as an appetizer.  He then ordered the  “Broiled Mayflower Special” for dinner. This was Flounder, Alaskan White Fish, Baby Shrimp, Jumbo Shrimp, Scallops and Deviled Crab.

Both of us dived into the calamari. It is so rare that we eat fried foods, we probably just loved it due to the breading.  It was the best part of both our meals.

As for me, I had the “Broiled Salmon Steak” with green beans instead of  a starch.  They gave me 2 pcs. of salmon. Shane loved his piece!  The beans were absolutely soaked in some kind of buttery, funky tasting sauce.

Here is the recap of the meal.

road-food-008The salad had imitation bacon bits. Two HUGE onion rings (an no plate to discard them on) and iceburg lettuce, cherry tomatoes (yay!), cheese, 2 pcs. of red cabbage, and crackers.

Following dinner, we decided to hit the liquor store, just a walk from our hotel.  Since we planned on watching Dallas vs. Baltimore tonight, we wanted a glass of wine to go with a good game 1.  We didn’t know that the liquor store didn’t carry wine-just hard liquor, and 2.  We didn’t know the game was on the NFL station- which our hotel didn’t offer.

As for the wine, we high tailed it off to the local convenience store and enjoyed this “elegant” serving of wine.

road-food-010That’s not just a very big cup, it’s a 187 ml bottle of wine – enough for each of us to share about 1/3 of that cup each.

As for the game, we didn’t get to watch it.  Good thing we brought our books.  Wine and Reading…ahhh, the end to a long day.  Good night.

Gotta love a road trip … even if the local fare wasn’t all it was cracked up to be! Good ol’ NC!! 🙂

We love to pack our food “to-go” when we spend hours in the car … it’s always more enjoyable to us than stopping at some gross fast food joint.

    Have a safe trip!
